Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) has been used as a bleaching chemical (for bleaching pulp) commercially for many years in Pulping Industries. Chlorine Dioxide production processes are based on the reduction of chlorate (using Cl-, CH3OH or SO2) in the presence of either sulphuric or hydrochloric acid where etching and corrosion occurs at the equipments used throughout the process.
Chlorine dioxide being very unstable compound are always produced on the site where it is used and the storage vessels require additional resistance to hold the chemical and must be controlled to minimize decomposition of the ClO2.

Chlor Alkali Anode |
In chlor alkali industries three types of electrolytic process are adopted for the production of caustic, chlorine, hypochlorite chemicals :
- Membrane cell process ( louver anode, mesh anodes )
- Diaphragem cell process ( box anode, perforated anode )
- Mercury cell process ( mesh, strip anode, rod, weir anode )
In each process salt ( brine ) solution is electrolyzed by the action of direct electric current, which converts the chloride ions to chlorine.
The reaction is :
2NaCl + 2H2O = Cl2 + H2 + 2NaOH
In all the methods chlorine (Cl2) is produced at the positive electrode ( anode ) and the hydrogen (H2) and Sodium Hydroxide ( NaOH or caustic soda ) are produced directly or indirectly at the negative electrode ( cathode ). Membrane or Diaphragm or Mercury is used to separate the anode products from the cathode products according the process adopted.

Membrane cell technology is a recent development in chlor alkali process. In membrane cell process, membrane is used to separate the anode products from the cathode products.Saturated brine enters the anode compartment of the cell where chlorine gas is liberated.The membrane allows the migration of sodium ions from the anode chamber to the cathode chamber.
Since only sodium ions can pass through the membrane to the cathode, the caustic soda contains substantially less sodium chloride. So salt removal capabilities are not required as in the diaphragm cell process.

The collected chlorine from anode chamber is purified by liquefaction & evaporation. Commercial caustic soda is produced from the caustic brine collected from the cathode chamber.

In chlor alkali industrie 's mercury cell process, the liquid mercury cathode and the purified brine concurrently flows into the mercury cell. The electrolytic process creates chlorine (Cl2) at the anode chamber and sodium at the cathode chamber.
The collected chlorine from the anode dried, compressed and bottled. The sodium will form sodium amalgam by mixing with mercury. The amalgam is then reacted with water to produce hydrogen gas and caustic soda solution. The caustic, mercury and hydrogen will be seperated before caustic is proceeding to storage. Potassium chlorate (KClO3) is manufactured by the electrolytic oxidation of Potassium Chloride (KCl) using chlorate cells, where in TiTaN 's MMO coated titanium substrate anodes are used.

PLATINIZED IMPRESSED CURRENT CATHODIC PROTECTION ANODE
These impressed current anodes are also known as dimensionally stable anode or insoluble anodes. Platinum is an excellent anode material due to its high conductivity and low consumption rate. Due to its high cost, it is not economical to use platinum by itself. So that platinized anodes are produced by electroplating a thin layer of platinum over a lower cost substrate such as titanium, tantalum, niobium or zirconium etc.

Anodes are specially designed for aqueous environments with a PVC perforated tube that directs current flow and provides extra protection to the anode.
The traditional large and heavy impressed-current anodes are thought to be the only way for preventing corrosion in numerous types of buried and submerged structures. With the development of the mixed metal oxide anodes, the idea has been greatly challenged.The coating of the mixed metal oxides on the anodes has an almost negligible consumption rate of less than 1.0 mg/amp-yr. TiTaN manufactures the complete solid mixed-metal oxide anodes for use in a variety of corrosion-prone environments. The anodes are composed of titanium rod, titanium tube, titanium ribbon mesh substrates, which are coated with amixed-metal-oxide catalyst. TiTaN's Platinized niobium metal anode ( PLANMA ) is the most suitable anode to the electrolytes having fluoride. Commercially pure niobium has been confirmed to have a high resistance to anodic breakdown potential in sodium chloride and sea water. Niobium has attraction for use over titanium where extremely high reliability is required in long life, high value iccp systems, and accordingly is so used.
TiTaN's platinized niobium wire anodes are designed for effective operating in fresh, brackish and saltwater; used in all types of aqueous storage and process equipment. These anode aren't adversely affected by high chloride concentrations. Use of special type anodes increases in the electroplating bath’s life. Sodium Chlorate Manufacturing System |
TiTaN’s Sodium chlorate manufacturing system consists of Electrolyzers, a reactor, a cooler, Crystallizer, Centrifuge, Dryer, Inter-connecting piping. When direct current is applied, the hydrogen gas is evolved at the Cathode, which displaces liquor and reduces the specific gravity of the electrolyte in the electrolyser and the outlet piping. The differential specific gravity between the liquor in the electrolyser and that in the reactor creates a high rate of circulation. The circulation is through the cooler, into the bottom of each cell in the electrolyser, between the anodes and cathodes in the cells.
Where electrolysis occur, up the riser pipes to the degasifier (where the hydrogen separates) and back to the top of the reactor.The heat produced in the electrolysers is removed by an external cooler, which maintains the electrolytic system at its optimum operating temperature. The reactor is designed to provide the retention time required for conversion of intermediate reaction products to sodium chlorate.The liquor from the reactor is treated to remove the sodium hypochlorite and then fed to the crystallization system. The crystallization system consists of a crystallizer, Vacuum equipment, a centrifuge and dryer. The crystallizer operates under vacuum conditions. In the vessel, water is flashed from hot incoming hypo-free chlorate liquor and crystal formation and growth takes place. The mother liquor is returned to the Electrolysers. The crystals are washed and dried to form the final product.
SODIUM CHLORATE MANUFACTURING PROCESS
The manufacturing process of Sodium chlorate involves the electrolysis of an acidified sodium chloride solution in a specially designed Electrolyser.First, raw brine is treated to remove impurities such as calcium and magnesium. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is added to control the pH and improve efficiency. Sodium dichromate is used as a catalyst, to inhibit electrochemical side reactions and as a pH buffer.

ON SITE ELECTROCHLORINATION (BRINE CHLORINATION) It is a simple and proven technology to convert ordinary salt (common salt), by means of electrolysis into 1st grade sodium hypochlorite (ELECTRO HYPO) using RT CHLOR® SERIES hypochlorite generators ( electro chlorinator system). It is always applied on-site, at the point of application. No chemicals other than ordinary salt are used throughout the process.
A diluted brine solution is fed through an electrolyser cell ( chlorinator ). When a low voltage DC current is applied, electrolysis occurs and sodium hypo chlorite (NaOCl) is generated instantaneously. ELECTRO HYPO is generated between 0.2% and 0.8% depending on the application. Below 1%, hypo is classified as a non-hazardous chemical although still a very effective disinfectant. The only by-product, hydrogen, is safely vented into the atmosphere.

Water is considered as a raw material in industrial processes. When water is a raw material, it has to strictly meet the requirements due to the concerned process in terms of purity, salinity, microbiological presence, pathogens, solids, turbidity, undesirable salts. WATER provides a good environment for harmful microbes to grow and causes biological fouling and corrosion in water and reduces the efficiency of the condensers used for cooling or process in refining of oil/gas products, specialty chemicals (petrochemical refineries), power plant and other process industries.
Shock dosing of sodium hypo-chlorite at set intervals makes the firewater pump caissons / firewater main loop clean and free from macro-fouling (algae free).
To prevent the growth of microorganisms, algae and biofilms TiTaN® offers the state of art RT CHLOR®-S Series onsite sodium hypochlorite generator (chlorine generator systems) for treating the process water or cooling water and fire water streams to meet the industrial (process) challenges.
RT CHLOR®-S SYSTEM incorporates TiTaN's state of art bipolar KLOROGEN® / KLOROGEN®-S parallel plate electrolyzer or Hypopac® concentric tubular bipolar electrolyzer for generating free radicals and chlorine as Hypochlorite. Batch Chlorinators |
TiTaN's state of art RT CHLOR® SERIES BATCH HYPOCHLORITE generation systems (NaOCl Generators) / electrochlorinator converts brine solution to hypochlorite with the applied current voltage, by means of electrolysis into 1st grade sodium hypochlorite (ELECTRO HYPO). Hypochlorite thus generated are applied on-site, at the point of application. No chemicals other than common salt (food grade NaCl) are used throughout the process.
BATCH HYPO PRODUCTION (6-8hrs batch) : A saturated brine solution mixed with softened water (batch) fed through the hypochlorite generating electrolyzer(s). The batch is recirculated several times to raise the concentration till NaCl exhausts in solution. Batch produced hypochlorite, then stored into a degas/storage tank is injected into the water supply or wastewater systems for disinfection and treatment.
RT CHLOR® Batch Electrochlorinators are designed to generate hypochlorite for a wide range of applications in safe, low cost, reliable and portable packages.TiTaN® offers RT CHLOR® Batch Chlorinator System as Skid Mounted Batch Sodium Hypo System or loose components which includes KLOROGEN® Batch Chlorinator Electrolyzers, Replacement Cell Assembly for Existing Batch Chlorinators.

Biofouling in seawater lines are a perennial problem caused due to the barnacles, mussels and other forms of marine life in the seawater. For marine & offshore world such as Offshore PLATFORMS, FPSO, FSOs, NAVAL VESSELS, CRUISE SHIPS, CARGO SHIPS, OIL RIGS etc, seawater is the only source for cooling and fire water.
In such sensitive applications biofouling or the marine growth in the seawater line is a huge concern as it restricts cooling water flow in piping systems thus affecting the heat-transfer in the heatexchangers and condensers (clogging).
TiTaN®'s RT Marine™ Series of Marine Growth prevention Systems (MGPS) when fitted, generates various oxidants and radicals by seawater electrolysis including sodium hypochlorite onsite which inturn can be used to disinfect water, preventing marine growth.

BIO INVASION AND AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES: Ships often take up ballast water in ports and coastal regions, where the ecosystems have a rich diversity of life. These biologically diverse waters, and their underlying sediments,including many forms of viruses, bacteria, plankton, algae, crustaceans, plants and animals, are sucked into vessels’ ballast tanks. Ballast water released during various stages of the ship’s journey, including at sea, along coastlines, and in various ports, results a diverse mix of organisms transported and released around the world.In addition, ballast water can carry organisms that endanger public health, including toxic dinoflagellates and cholera bacteria, having ecological effects.
In order to stop an invasion, organisms must not be discharged from ballast tanks. This action can be achieved by not taking organisms into ballast tanks, killing organisms during the voyage, or not discharging organisms when ballast water is released.
