Gold Electroplating

One of the most attractive and precious decorative metal is Gold. This metal is mainly used for Jewelry and decorative electronic Items. This process involves deposition of a thin layer of gold on the surface of some other metal. Apart from gold the other metals mostly used are Silver or copper. Gold imparts excellent corrosion resistance properties when deposited in surface of copper. Copper Electroplating

For applications where corrosion protection is important, the use of silver plating with an electrodeposited nickel undercoat is advantageous.

Silver Plating - Underplate Recommendations

Silver plating on steel, zinc and zinc-based alloys should have an undercoat of nickel over copper.

Silver plating on copper and copper alloys should have a nickel undercoat. Copper and copper alloy material on which a nickel undercoat is not used, and other base metals where a copper undercoat is employed, should not be used for continuous service at a temperature in excess of 300 degrees F (149 degrees C). Adhesion of the silver plating is adversely affected because of the formation of a weak silver and copper intermetallic layer.

Brass Electroplating

Apart from gold, copper & silver another important metal used for electroplating is brass. brass electroplating is used for the creation of bass sculptures. brass electro formation refers to a metal forming process which is formed in thin parts through the electroplating process & is produced as a result of plating a metal skin onto a base form. This is known as mandrel. Brass electroforming process which produces plating, much thicker and can sustain itself even if the mandrel is removed.

Types of plating:

Conventional cyanide plating process.

It plates twice as fast as any other cyanide brass process]
It is a single additive process with excellent throwing power that produces a lustrous, highly desirable yellow-green, 70/30 brass color
It is a low temperature process operating at 105° F and can be used in both rack and barrel operations
The copper and zinc plate together in a uniform alloy composition over a wider current density and temperature range, thereby helping to reduce rejects due to poor color, non-uniformity and poorly oxidized finishes
The E-Brite B-150 utilizes electrosolv as an anode corroder which retards the growth of carbonates, plus in barrel brass lines utilizing electrosolv will eliminate the need for addition of copper and zinc cyanide when using 70/30 brass anodes

BPA (Brass Passivating Agent)

An alkaline, chromate-based passivating solution for brass, bronze, copper and silver
It is used cathodically after plating to prevent spotting and bleed-out and preserves the original color of plated surfaces
It provides excellent short term protection for parts in processing with resistance to 100 hour salt spray and 500 hours of 100% humidity without a lacquer topcoat
It is the preferred agent for increased corrosion resistance for plated objects top-coated with a clear acrylic or epoxy lacquer and also for clear powder coatings
The use of BPA will double and even quadruple the life of a clear top-coat
It also works equally as well on solid wrought brass alloys and copper

Tin plating is a lower cost alternative than some protective coatings. Tin also has a good level of conductivity enhancement properties (as opposed to silver which has higher conductivity) which may be of benefit to manufacturers seeking to enhance this property somewhat without adding too much to the price.

Colour & Aesthetics:

Substrates suited to this coating:

Design Cautions

As this is an electrolytic process it is necessary to use jigging, racking or wiring to provide for electrical current conductivity. Some shapes lend themselves more easily to this than others. In some cases the addition of a sprue or hole is necessary. Please consult your plating adviser prior to finalising design if you intend to use this finishing process.

Hard Chrome Electroplating

Hard Chrome Electroplating is produced by Electro-deposition in a solution of chromic acid. It is also known as industrial, functional or engineering chromium plating and is very different from decorative chromium plating.

Zinc Electroplating

Zinc plating is the most common and economical type of plating. Zinc plating is a soft, protective by nature, decorative, ductile, marginally solderable and also serves as an effective undercoat for paints. It is sacrificial coating, so that part does not corrode. Zinc plating is available in clear, yellow, black and olive green. Trivalent chromate passivations are available if requested .

Steps of Commercial Zinc Electroplating Process

On the commercial scale, zinc electroplating is done by the following steps.

Surface of the metal is cleaned in alkaline detergent type solutions, and it is treated with acid, in order to remove any rust or surface scales. Cleanliness is essential for successful zinc electroplating, as the molecular layers of oil or rust can prevent adhesion of the coating.
Next, the zinc is deposited on the metal by immersing it in a chemical bath containing dissolved zinc. A DC current is applied, which results in zinc being deposited on the cathode. Alkaline zinc baths are used by the finished products, to produce a more consistent zinc thickness, especially in recesses.
Hence an increased protection from corrosion is provided, as the corrosion of the deposited zinc is reduced. The zinc coating can increase the time required for the formation of white rust, by ten times. Finished Products also apply sealers, which are now commonly being specified by the automotive industry, further increasing corrosion protection.

It is very difficult to obtain a uniform thickness of coating, with electroplating technique. The thickness of the coating is very much dependent on the geometry of the object being plated, and it is preferentially on the external corners and protrusions of the metal body, hence not much of it is deposited on internal corners and recesses. Zinc electroplating process is used to make a clean, smooth and corrosion resistant surface. It also makes an excellent undercoat for powder coating or paint and can leave recesses on complex shaped components without sufficient zinc coating, in order to provide corrosion protection.
