Cold Spray Process
  • The Cold Spray process basically uses the energy stored in high pressure compressed gas to propel fine powder particles at very high velocities (500 - 1500 m/s). Compressed gas is fed via a heating unit to the gun where the gas exits through a specially designed nozzle (level type convergent-divergent nozzle mostly) at very high velocity. Compressed gas is also fed via a high pressure powder feeder to introduce powder material into the high velocity gas jet. The powder particles are accelerated and moderately heated to a certain velocity and temperature where on impact with a substrate they deform and bond to form a coating. As with the other processes a fine balance between particle size, density, temperature and velocity are important criteria to achieve the desired coating.

  • Cold spraying Equipment used for application of various metal coatings based on aluminium, copper, zinc, nickel, lead, tin, Babbitt etc. This type of coating used for different purposes, such as:
    • Recovery of the shape and size of parts;
    • Creating electrical contact pads;
    • Elimination of moulding and mechanical defects;
    • The elimination of leaks of liquids and gases (sealing);
    • Corrosion protection;
    • Protection "setting" (EP coating);
    • Prevent sparking;
    • Recovery anti-friction coating of plain bearings;
    • Decoration.
  • The main properties of the coatings

    • High adhesion (30-80 MPa);
    • High cohesion (30-80 MPa);
    • Homogeneity of the surface;
    • Low porosity (1-3%);
    • High electrical conductivity between the coating and the substrate;
    • Any coating thickness (20 microns to 10 cm);
    • Roughness of the surface coating is Rz = 20-40;
    • Processing coatings produced by conventional machining methods;
    • Coating may be applied to any metal, glass and ceramics.

Laser Cladding

What is Laser Cladding ?

  •   

    Laser cladding falls into the group of processes commonly known as hard-facing. The laser cladding process is a method of applying a fully dense, metallurgically bonded and virtually pure coating which can be used to increase the wear resistance, corrosion resistance or impact performance of metallic components. In some cases, all three of the properties can be improved. The process utilises a precisely focussed high power laser beam to create a weld pool into which a metallic powder is applied. The powder, which is carried by a stream of inert shielding gas, is blown coaxially through the laser beam. The highly accurate nature of the laser beam allows fully dense cladding with minimal dilution (<5%), yet with a perfect metallurgical bond. Numerous coatings can be applied, the composition of which can be designed to combat the failure mechanisms associated with each component.

     

Fundamentals Of Laser Cladding

    • Typical single layer thickness: 0.2 - 2.0mm (multiple layers possible)
    • Heat input to part: low to moderate
    • Dilution with substrate material: variable with parameters but can be <5% gives a very pure coating with the desired coating properties.

  • Benefits Of Laser Clad Coatings

  • One of the major benefits associated with laser cladding is the ability to finely control the heat input to the substrate and the coating material. This allows the ability to deposit a two phase Metal Matrix Composite structure. In simple terms, the coating can have a softer, lower melting point material (the matrix) in which a harder wearing, higher melting point material (the hard phase) is suspended.
    The matrix material is typically a nickel based alloy. This matrix provides toughness, ductility, and impact resistance whilst being wear resistant at elevated temperatures.
    A reinforcing hard phase is typically a tungsten carbide but can also be titanium nitride / carbide, chromium carbide etc.
    The fine control of the heat input allows the matrix to be completely melted, alloyed and bonded to the substrate surface, whilst at the same time, the carbide particles remain un-melted and are distributed evenly throughout the matrix. This is demonstrated in the adjacent coating section. This results in an extremely wear and impact resistant coating.

Standard Cabinet Type Blasting Machines
  • MEC offers an environment friendly cabinet type abrasive blasting machine for generating anchor pattern on components that can be handled in a cabinet enclosure and operator maneuver the blasting nozzle from hand holes provided at the front of cabinet. To view the blasting operation, a vision window is provided at front side.

     

    3 variants are available in the cabinet type blasting machines, viz., Suction blasting, Pressure Blasting & Wet Blasting.

     

    Suction Blasting : Works on Injection Suction principle of blasting. Uses the venturi principle to draw abrasive from a non-pressurized hopper to the blast gun where it is combined with the compressed air stream and propelled against the work surface. Suction blast machines are most easily distinguished by having two hoses (one for air and one for abrasive) running to the blast gun.

     

    Pressure Blasting: Works on Direct Pressure principle of blasting. Uses a pressurized vessel or "blast pot" that holds the abrasive media. In a pressure blast machine the air pressure in the vessel and in the "pusher" line is the same. This means that there is no pressure differential between the blast pot and the blast line – this allows the abrasive media to meter into the air stream at the blast pot and then run the length of the blast hose out to the nozzle. Pressure abrasive blast equipment has a single hose running to the blast nozzle.

     

    Wet Blasting: Works on Injection Suction principle of blasting. Uses a slurry pump to draw the wet slurry of very fine abrasive and water to the blast gun where it is combined with the compressed air stream and propelled against the work surface.

Vacuum Blasting Machine

MEC offer portable dust free abrasive blasting equipment with high vacuum power and efficient separation for abrasives & debris. MEC vacuum blasting machines are suitable for different purposes, applications for surface preparation before coating and needs only one man to operate. The blasters are based on pressure vessels in combination with compressed air filters and pressure regulators that ensure sufficient speed of blasting operation in a dust free environment. Abrasive is automatically and instantly recovered for reuse. No flying dust & abrasive to contaminate surrounding.

A special valve on pressure vessel allows to work with a blasting pressure as low as 1 bar and as high as 7 bar with the same machine. Vacuum blasting technique can be used on delicate blasting jobs where blasting on low pressures is a must. All MEC vacuum blasting machines comes with a standard special lightweight blast head, blast and vacuum hose assembly, as well as a set of brushes to treat flat surfaces. Grit Blasting Room
  • Blast room equipment is used in a wide variety of industries that require surface preparation prior to the application of a protective coating. The surface of the work piece is cleaned by a mixture of abrasive and high pressure compressed air being directed on to the work piece by blast nozzle. The blast room contains the abrasive being shot at the work piece, as well providing lighting and ventilation for the operator's safety.

     

    MEC offer a variety of blast room designs and room configuarations which allow to design a blast room facility uniquely tailored to meet the economic production, safety and environmental concerns of each customer.

     

    The modular blast room is specially ventilated and illuminated for enclosed abrasive blasting, and is fully sealed, dust tight, all steel structure. The components are prefabricated for simple bolt-together erection, with little or no site welding required. The enclosure stands by it's own structural support without connections to the surrounding facilities. The size of the job depends on :-

  • MEC Linear Track as 7th Axis for Robot

    To coat on long jobs mounted on a lathe, robot needs to move for accessibility throughout the whole length. MEC provides a linear track on which one 6-axis robot can be mounted on a motorized trolley which can be moved along the length as per the requirement of job length. The robot gives the command to the 7th axis to move according to the pre-programmed menu.

    To provide rigid and accurate horizontal job rotation arrangement for precise job rotational motion and to get the uniform coating thickness on the entire surface of job, MEC provides a solution for rotational motion. It has one fixed head stock and one tail stock trolley which can be moved along the length as per the requirement of job length. The complete structure is mounted on level adjusting bots and the support brackets can be anchored with floor. The system has special feature of wide range of RPM selection.

  • MEC X/XY/XYZ/XYZR Gun Manipulator

    To provide a controlled linear gun traverse unit for the horizontal or vertical or lateral or any combination of movement for spray gun, MEC designs vide variety of gun manipulators for consistent and precise thermal spray coating . The X/X-Y/X-Y-Z/X-Y-Z-R gun traverse provides accurate and repeatable gun motions (To & Fro) via a Rack & Pinion or Ball screw arrangement. Each axis can be programmed for efficient controlled and repeated motion to the gun. The manipulators can be designed in AC variable drives or with servo controlled drives as per job coating requirement to Improve coating quality, to Retain coating uniformity, to Increases productivity, to Better utilization of material, to have Less rejection in coating (Due to even spray) and to Reduce operator's involvement.
     
    The hoses have proper fittings at both sides to connect the control panel & gun distinctly. Initially hoses will be connected to control console and the hoses blown out at low pressure before the gun is connected.
