After the adhesive is cured, a testing apparatus is attached to the loading fixture and aligned to apply tension perpendicular to the test surface. The force applied is gradually increased and monitored until either a plug of coating material is detached, or a specified value is reached.

Pinhole Detector

The multi-voltage pinhole detector, which uses the wet sponge principle to detect through pinholes, cracks and damaged areas in protective coatings up to a maximum thickness of 500 microns. Pinhole Detectors or wet sponge tester detects pinholes, voids, thin spots, foreign inclusions, or contamination in coatings film. Dielectric srenth of film also refered as holiday detection.

A low voltage holiday detector / wet sponge tester operation is by the application of a wet sponge to the coating. The wetting agent penetrates any pinhole and makes a conductive path through to the substrate, the pin hole detector automatically detects this conductive path and sounds an audible alarm and also gives a visual warning by a flashing red indicator that a pinhole fault has been detected. The flaw can now be marked for repair and further testing resumed. Coating on metals prevents to corrode unless a protective coating is applied. Pinholes based on wet sponge method generally caused by air entrapment that is then released from the surface, or by the entrapment of particulates (dust, sand, etc.), which do not stay in place. High voltage holiday detector is used for testing coatings above 500µm and low voltage holiday detector (Pinhole Detector ) is used below 500µm of coating on metallc substrates.

D.C.V.G Survey Equipment

DCVG-UK manufactured useful equipment. when DC is applied to a pipeline in the same manner as in cathodic protection, a voltage gradient is established in the ground due to the passage of current through the resistive soil to the bare steel exposed at a coating fault.

The voltage gradient becomes larger and more concentrated the greater the current flowing and the closer you are to a coating fault location. In general,  the larger the fault, the greater the current flow and hence bigger the voltage gradient.

The direct current voltage gradient method (DCVG) uses a sensitive mili-volt meter, to indicate the potential difference between two copper/copper sulphate half cells placed in the soil in the voltage gradient at ground level. If spaced two metres apart in a voltage gradient, one half cell will adopt a more positive potential than the other, which thus enables the size of the gradient and direction of the current flow causing the voltage gradient to be established.

This type survey may be conducted on coated pipelines regardless of their location. Unaffected by parallel lines, depths or cover, the survey can often be, in part, conducted from a moving vehicle over the pipe. In brief, the Null Method follows the flow of impressed audio frequency current in a coated pipe and determines where it leaves. The point of current discharge is determined by a sharp disturbance of the null itself rather than the signal level of the audio frequency. This method is quite practical, particularly as competent field personnel can interpret findings quickly and accurately.

Oscillator

The oscillator provided with the set has been designed to use the latest developments in this type of instrumentation. A signal of 750 c.p.s. is generated by using a power transistor switching circuit. This arrangement eliminates troublesome vibrators, buzzers or other moving part elements. The Transistor Oscillator converts low voltage (twelve volts) d.c. to stable audio frequency a.c. directly and hence, by a highly efficient method, the input current to the Oscillator is only 1.7 amperes for a full output of fifteen watts, a conversion efficiency of better than 80%. NACE TM 0177 Method B, the NACE Standard Bent-Beam Test, provides for testing carbon and low-alloy steels subjected to tensile stress to evaluate resistance to cracking failure in low-pH aqueous environments containing H2S. The compact size of the bent- beam test specimen facilitates testing small, localized areas and thin materials. Bent beam test specimens loaded to a particular deflection give a failure/no-failure test result. We recommend to use this test for thin material thickness or low diameter pipe materials and welding test. This method involves deflecting each test specimen in a series by applying a bending stress. The stressed test specimens then are exposed to the test environment, and the failure (or no-failure) by cracking is determined hence becoming very popular and easy test method for labs. There is also benifit in the method which constitutes a constant- deflection test of low test specimen compliance. The computed stress is called a pseudo-stress because it does not reflect. At a time 12 to 16 samples can be tested.

Four Point Bend S.S.C Test

Caltech Engineering Services manufacture and supply  four point bending SSC test jigs, and also test vessels to test and accurately determine the stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of metals in H2S service. Test rigs meet requirements of ASTM / NACE Standard TM-0177 and suitable to test material as per requirements of NACE MR0175. Main objective of this test is to evaluate materials for the service behavior or to screen alloys for service in a specific severe environment for an accelerated time. The 4-point bend SSC test is performed using ASTM G-39 and NACE TM0177 standards.

Hydrogen Induced Cracking Test

Caltech Engineering Services manufactures hydrogen induced cracking testing apparatus ( HIC test ) to test and accurately determine the hydrogen induced cracking over exposed test specimens as per NACE standards requirements. HIC testing is recommended to evaluate the resistance of pipeline and pressure vessel plate steels to hydrogen induced cracking corrosion caused by hydrogen absorption from aqueous sulfide corrosion. Unstressed test specimens are exposed to a solution at temperature of 25deg cent with continuous H2S gas flow. The test specimens are finally removed and evaluated. Test specimens determine susceptibility of metals in H2S service. HIC testing apparatus meet requirements of ASTM / NACE Standard TM0284 and suitable to test material as per requirements of NACE MR0175.

Root Weld Spacing Gauge

Easy operation determines rootweld spacing.

1. Unlock the retaining screw and insert the gauge interior alignment stops between the two      pieces of pipe to be fitted.

2. Insert the leg with the longer taper into the root gap until it makes contact with both sides of  the gap.
3. Re-lock the retaining screw, remove the gauge and read it.
4. The scale is calibrated in fractional dimensions from 1/32 to 3/16 in 1/16 inch increments.      The read-out you receive represents the amount of rootweld gap

Adjustable Fillet Weld Gauge

Measuring fillet welds used to be a trial with complicated or inaccurate gauges. Not any more. Now you can measure fillet welds from 1/8" to 1" (with ±1/32" accuracy) with one economical, simple to understand gauge.
The G.A.L. Adjustable Fillet Weld Gauge uses an offset arm which slides at a 45° angle to make fillet weld length measurements. Simply adjust the arm until it touches the toe of the vertical leg. The gauge is calibrated to 32nds, with metric equivalents given, so you get more accurate readings. Four screws hold the offset arm in position for future adjustments.
