Anodizing

Masking and Plugging:

As per the customer requirement, this step is performed. Areas can be masked and holes can be plugged for Dimensional criticality, and also for preventing the coverage of the complete area leading to electrical conductivity.

Jigging and Fixture :

Either titanium or aluminum is used as jigging material. A perfect firm contact must be ensured between the jigs and the components, so that the flow of current at any time of process should be continuous and should withstand the rigorous air agitation and turbulence. Any metal inserts should be avoided masked so as to avoid any electrolyte coming in contact should be totally avoided. The electrical bar contacts and jigs should be always being free from any oxidation and salt formation to ensure perfect flow of current.

Normal Anodizing

Normal Anodizing/Type II Anodizing :

Normal acid Anodizing, often called “Type II, Class 1 & 2 anodizing” as denoted by MIL spec 8625, is an electro-chemical process that creates a controlled oxide film on the surface of aluminum. This is a standard specification used for aerospace, military and defense industry Sulfuric acid anodizing is a process that provides a conversion on aluminum which changes the surface of the material to a naturally occurring aluminum oxide. The oxide build up changes the surface of the aluminum which then provides greater abrasion resistance as well as increased corrosion protection. The finish will not only build up the aluminum oxide on the surface. Other than a clear anodize this coating may also be dyed in various colors. The typical industry colors include black, clear, green, gold, red, and blue. The less alloying elements in the aluminium, the result will be better for dying the anodic layer. One of the interesting property of the aluminum oxide is that it is a great electrical insulator.

Hard Anodizing

Hard Anodizing/Type III Anodizing :

Hard coat Anodizing, often called “Type III anodizing” as denoted by MIL spec 8625, is an electro-chemical process that creates a controlled oxide film on the surface of aluminum.Hardcoat Anodizing utilizes sulfuric acid, sub zero bath temperatures, and constant current rectification to achieve a very hard coating. Hard coat Anodizing is generally used for applications that need a strong corrosive, abrasive, and wear resistant coating than normal anodizing. The appearance of the coating ranges from light to dark gray, depending on the alloy makeup of the aluminum substrate, and it can also be dyed black.

Properties of Hard coat Anodizing:

  • Compatible with adhesives and paints.
  • Excellent abrasion resistant.
  • Resistant to marine and atmospheric corrosion.
  • High surface hardness.
  • Electrical resistant.
  • Withstand high operative temperature.

Anodizing Dyes

Anodizing Dyes : The anodized aluminium will have a coating which much protective and robust. To get vivid colors as per the requirement, we dye the aluminium and seal the surface. This will give a brilliant metallic finish. Aluminium alloy and the quality will have a significant impact on the finish and color of the product. Most alloys will color well but some are suitable only for dark colors.Variation may occur in the same color on the same alloy can occur due to difference in shape or thickness.

Sealing :Sealing is normally carried out in boiling water with or without additives, when it is necessary to compromise between hardness/abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance. Sealing tends to lower the abrasion resistance and the micro hardness of the anodic oxide coating, and can lead to micro cracks.

Coloring and Sealing are optional processes which are carried out only at customer request.

Chromate Conversion

Aluminum will be treated by a corrosion resistant conversion coating called Chromate Conversion.Chemical Conversion Coating is often referred to as chem film, chromate coating, or yellow chromate coating. This coating process applies chromate to the metal substrate, creating a surface that is corrosion resistant, durable, and exhibits stable electrical conductivity. It is used to protect enclosures and metal parts from corrosion, and to ensure that reliable electrical connections can be made to aluminum chassis and components. It is also an effective pretreatment for powder coat. Chemical Conversion Coating process meets a number of specifications, and qualifies as Type II, Class 1a and 3 under MIL-DTL-5541F. ‘Type II” means the process does not utilize non RoHS hexavalent chrome. Class 1a refers its ability to protect against corrosion. Class 3 refers to its ability to provide reliable electrical conductivity. Details are given below. There are three types of chromate conversion. i.e., Trivalent, Hexavalent and Chromfree.

This is a Chromate based process which shall form a passivation film on the surface and increase its corrosion resistance. It will also increase the adherence of the surface towards any organic coatings such as primers, enamels, etc.

[hexavalent] MIL-DTL-5541F, Type I, Class 1A & Class 3 coatings are intended to provide corrosion prevention when left unpainted as well as to improve adhesion of paint finish systems on aluminum alloys.

Chemical : Hexavalent Chrome Solution with specific concentration along with maintained temperature and pH.

Properties of Hexavalent Chromate Conversion :

Non-RoHS Complaint.
Process can result in Yellow as well as Clear chromate conversion.
Very high Corrosion resistant.
Very good adhesion for paints.

[trivalent-chromate] MIL-DTL-5541F, Type II, Class 3 coatings are intended for use as a corrosion preventative film for electrical and electronic applications where lower electrical resistance.

Chemical : Trivalent Chrome Solution with specific concentration along with maintained temperature and pH.

Properties of Trivalent Chromate Conversion :

Low toxicity.-RoHS complaint.
Process result in clear color.
High Corrosion resistant.
Forms a good base for painting.

Properties of Chrom-Free :

This has the similar properties as chromate based conversion with RoHS complaint except the solution used will be Titanium based.

Stainless Steel Passivation

Stainless Steel Passivation is a process by which stainless steel will form an invisible, passive, chemically inactive, corrosion resistant layer on the surface. Passivation of steel is removal of exogenous iron by means of chemical process.

Alcoats performs S.S.Passivation according to the specification ASTM A 967. This specification covers minimum requirements such as pre-treatment of the surface like solvent cleaning, degreasing, passivation procedure, testing during qualification and inspection for passivation of Austenitic stainless steels such as SS304/304L and SS316/316L with more than 16%Chromium in the alloy content. Passivation is required to improvise the corrosion resistance and/ or impart better adhesion to the organic coating on stainless steel.

This process is performed when the surface is free from iron, oxide scale, rust, metal chips or any other deposits which might affect the stability and sanity of the surface. The process of passivation can only be done on the clean surface. Passivation of SS with Chromium greater than 16% shall be performed by adding nitic acid of different concentration for specific time and temperature.
