INA/INR reactors are designed to work in supply systems with a high level of harmonic distortion in such a way that they allow a safe and reliable service of the power factor detuned, so that, the whole unit has an inductive are specially designed to work in series with FMF capacitors correction equipments. Reactors are connected in series with power capacitors, forming a resonant circuit conveniently.Connection of a reactor in series with a power capacitor, makes the capacitor to work at a voltage higher than the supply voltage. Because of this, capacitors need to be connected to protection reactors and need to be designed to work at higher voltages than standard capacitors. The choice of the tuning point of the filters is to balance between the quantity of harmonics rejected by the filter and the voltage increase produced in the capacitor at the fundamental frequency.It is to be also kept in mind that reactive power supplied by the filter at rated frequency (50 or 60 Hz), is different to the one that the capacitor would supply without the reactor. Taking all the above into account, the reactor is normally chosen in such a way that its impedance is about 7% of the impedance of the capacitor that protects. Self-healing Process in Metallized Capacitors
Even the best plastic films, like ceramic materials, are not free from pin-holes.
However, in the case of metallized film capacitors it is possible to eliminate these faults by applying a much higher voltage than the rated voltage. This process is known as self-healing and practically makes a "zero defect dielectric" possible.
The self-healing process is started by an electric breakdown, which takes about 10-8 secs. In the breakdown channel, the dielectric is transformed into a highly compressed plasma which is pushed out of the channel and presses the dielectric layers apart .
The flawless course of the self-healing process depends on the thickness of the metallization, on the chemical composition and on the rate of the applied voltage; here, apart from the chemical composition, the production conditions have to provide the prerequisites for optimum self-healing.

This means that the plates of the 3PH Capacitor are of very small thickness that in the case of a transient, over voltage produces a dielectric breakdown, the current circulating through the breakdown point will vaporize the metallic plate around this breakdown point, allowing the capacitor to continue working normally. Self healing process is extremely fast & requires only a few microseconds. Internal fuse over pressure system( patented system): In certain markets, there are standards and specifications asking for an individual protection for each capacitor elements. This additional protection is also incorporated to AB lifasa capacitors. Its principle of function is as follows:
 

EG standards establish maximum limits of overload, on temperature, voltage and current among which a power capacitor can work.
If these limits are exceeded in a permanent way, self healing mechanism is not able to act effectively and the overloaded capacitor can fail definitely.
Unlike those capacitors with a metallic plate, self-healing capacitors present a fault impedance that can have very different values.

In this type of bank, the total kva is divided into a number of steps equal or unequal- depending upon the load conditions. The capacitor steps are switched in or out through a contactor, controlled by a power factor controller of type MCX. If a discharge coil (Voltage Transformer) is connected along with the steps, the discharge time of capacitors get reduced to 10 seconds (otherwise it is 10 minutes).
