A composite material is an anisotropic, heterogeneous medium, made by combining two or more materials with differing properties. Properties of the composite are different do not merge completely into each other and can be physically identified alongwith the interface between them. The properties of the interface also contribute to the properties of the composite.

Present day engineering materials must combine good mechanical, chemical, electrical and thermal properties, apart from having good aesthetic characteristics.
